Adding and organizing categories and tags

Product categories and tags are different ways you can use to organize, display, and filter products in your store.Though their uses overlap a bit, each one serves a slightly different purpose. In this document we’ll explore these two fundamental taxonomies for organizing and managing your product catalog effectively.
Categories: functioning with a hierarchical structure, categories enable merchants to group their products into broad, navigable sections, simplifying the browsing process for customers. This hierarchical nature allows for the creation of parent and child categories, offering a structured and intuitive way to navigate through products.

Go to products > categories.

Add new category: in the left column you can add a new category f.e: decoration in the name input field. Let's say this is the head (aka. parent) category. To save, click the ADD NEW CATEGORY BUTTON. The category will appear in the right column once added.

Add child category: let's say we want to add subcategory under the parent, decoration. For example: tableware, candles, vases, pillows,... Again type the category name, but additionally we're going to select a parent category, in this case decoration. That's how we make an hierarchic category structure.

Add sub child category: now we can continue making deeper and deeper category levels... For example, I can add new categories such as: plates, coffeecups, spoons but with the parent category selected on tableware.

If you've added all your categories in the right hierarchy, you'd become something like this when editing your products, which makes it easy to select multiple categories:

Tags: In contrast, Tags lack a hierarchical structure and provide a more flexible way of associating products. Tags are useful for applying specific descriptors to products, facilitating the discovery of related items based on shared characteristics, without the need for a rigid organizational framework.

Go to products > tags.

Add new tag: you do it exactly the same way as the categories but you can't work with parent and child hierarchy. In this case we've added al the brand names here, but you can add other important keywords for this product. For example: water-resistant, eco friendly, handmade, polyester,...
